Came across this last week after scouting the world wide web for a crisp version of Kraftwerks ‘Das Model‘. This however was not one of those disappointing finds, Tour De France if I’m not right in saying, is one of the signature songs that most of us refer to when we think of Kraftwerk. It’s timeless and get’s me going everytime I listen to it, but I still will never know why they don’t incorporate it into the actual Tour De France footage nowadays, as it would build suspense and just compliment the slick slipstream image that is conjured with men doing hours in the saddle wearing lycra. Anyway back to the post, Woes van Haaften was given the chance along with a further 139 artists to redesign the sleeve of their favourite song. He chose ‘Tour De France’ and stripped down the previous artwork to a simple clean image, which looks on point as it is. He then took the concept further by incorporating the mechanism from a valentines card within the sleeve so that once opened the actual Kraftwerk song would play. What I love is that he deliberately chose for the chip, speaker and wires to be visible to represent the minimalistic, technological image of the group. Enjoy.
